One Bank Holiday Friday morning twelve years ago, I woke up with a strange darkness to one side of one of my eyes, actually it was strange before I had gone to bed and I thought I was overtired and it would be fine with a good nights sleep. After an hour or two passing and it obviously was not getting any better, I rang my opticians - David Austen Optometry - for an emergency appointment. Following the appointment, it was apparent that I needed to go to the hospital, as it was thought - and later confirmed - that I had a detached retina. Jenny, after making several phone calls, was able to inform me that there was a retinal consultant present that day at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Jenny had made contact with the consultants secretary via fax and I was given his name and details etc.
On checking in at the eye department in Leciester Royal, I was told that I was unable to go straight to see the consultant as I had to go through the normal checking in procedures. By the time my name was called, the consultant had left. I was told that I did have a detached retina, but as the detachment had not reached the macula part of my eye, this meant that I was not considered an emergency so I would be assigned the next available theatre, by which time it would have reached my macula and I would be blind in that eye. I immediately phoned Jenny who told me to go straight home and that she would ring me. By this time it was after normal working hours, and Jenny and David cold called surgeons, as we were told that there was no one available in Nottingham. Hours later, after all their efforts they had found a surgeon, who later telephoned me and said he could do it the next day, Saturday, he just had to find a theatre and an anesthetist. Lots of phone calls later it was all arranged. The next day, in Birmingham, the operation was successfully performed.
From that day to this, I will never forget the extra mile that Jenny went, as if it was not for the dedication and desire to help me in the situation I was in, I would have had a very different life, living with one blind eye. I am and always will be, so very grateful. I will never go to a different optician, the company of David Austen saved my sight.
Absolutely wonderful friendly team, fantastic with children, I first brought my son to David Austen at the age of 2 after going to another high street optician who said they had no concerns. In fact he needed a very high prescription. If we ever have any problems, breakages or queries they are always very quick to help! I would highly recommend and thank All the team at David Austen.
The high professional standards at David Austen Optometrists are well known. Added to that I have just experienced superb customer service from Jenny and the whole team. I broke my spectacles at 7am yesterday, new frames were on order by mid-day, delivered within 24 hours, I was phoned at 2pm and the lenses reglazed into the new frames and all done by 3pm today – less than 36 hours from accident to complete replacement. And at a good price too. Superb service. Gold stars all round.
